Dr. Samira “Sam” Meymand hails from the great state of Texas and is now very happy to call Jacksonville, Florida her home. Dr. Meymand is an officer in the United States Navy who served for 26 years on active and reserve duty, achieving the rank of CAPTAIN in October 2022 and continues to serve in a reserve status.
Dr. Meymand is a Cumulative Dean’s Honor Roll graduate of the Baylor College of Dentistry and completed a General Practice Residency at the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, California. While on active duty, she was chosen to set up the first general practice dental clinic in Djibouti, Africa to serve our nation’s heroes at the “tip of the spear.” Following that assignment, Dr. Meymand was selected for an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at the prestigious National Capital Consortium, Naval Hospital Bethesda, Maryland.
After completing her four-year Oral and Maxillofacial surgery residency, Dr. Meymand deployed on the USNS Comfort (TAH-10) Navy ship where she performed oral surgery and served as Chief of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery in El Salvador, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Antigua, and Panama. She also served side by side with Plastic Surgeons assisting in Cleft Lip and Palate treatment with Operation Smile. For her final active duty assignment, Dr. Meymand served as Department Head and lead Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon for the Oral Surgery/Dental Clinic at Naval Hospital Jacksonville.
In January 2016, Dr. Meymand deployed as a Reservist on the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) in the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. During this deployment, she worked closely with the Ship’s Surgeon to provide surgical care to the 5,000 personnel crew assigned to Carrier Strike Group 8. In addition to performing surgical procedures on the carrier, she took calls on a 24-hour basis to provide emergency support for the sailors.
In 2018, she served as the Officer-In-Charge of EMF Camp Pendleton Camp Parks joint field exercise where she led a hospital team of 51 doctors, nurses, ancillary services, and hospital corpsmen through a mass casualty exercise. Her unit established and operated a 32-bed medical facility in an austere field environment, and trained other medical providers to provide full resuscitation and emergency stabilizing surgery within a combat zone.
During COVID-19, Dr. Meymand continued to lead and serve. She served in the COVID-19 clinic on the NAS Jacksonville base administering vaccinations, being available for emergencies, as well as mentoring junior Sailors. Additionally, she served with the Navy Reserve Center (NRC) Jacksonville CO and XO and helped develop a plan for patients to return to clinic operations where military members could still have dental exams and medical ePHAs performed. This was critical to allow the NRC Jacksonville Medical Department to resume medical and dental operations by August of 2020.
Currently, she serves as the US Navy Reserves Commanding Officer of the 14th Dental Company, 4th Dental Battallion at Ft. Dix, New Jersey leading dental readiness of Marines and Sailors along the East Coast.
